1. Shock them with your pout.
If you’ve been wearing a bright-red or coral lipstick all spring, keep the drama going by switching up the colour for summer. Inspired by the Luca Luca Spring/Summer 2012 runway show, a hot pink like
Clarins Joli Rouge in Indian Pink makes a shocking statement. Plus, even though it’s highly pigmented for long-lasting colour, the formula won’t dry out your lips (you’ll get enough of that from the sun). Apply from the inside of the lips outward, blot, then reapply for a stay-put finish. If you want an even pinker pout, smooth a dot of foundation on your lips before applying the lipstick; it will tone down your lips’ natural hue so you’ll see the shade straight-up. The only caveat? Don’t try to match your cheeks to those bright lips. Keep it subtle with a swipe of
CARGO blu_ray Blush/Highlighter in Peach on the apples of your cheeks.
2. Channel your inner feline.
Get on-trend by taking a cue from the spring/summer runways (see: Jonathan Saunders), and turn the girlish cat-eye into a gaze worthy of a lioness. Instead of ending in a little flick, the extended cat-eye ups the intensity with a thicker, bolder streak. Start with a long-wear eyeliner pencil like the
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner. (Try it in Stingray, a classic black, for no-holds-barred drama, or Triggerfish, a dark grey with a slightly pearlescent finish, for a fun hint of shimmer.) Line your upper lashline, starting at the inner corner. When you reach the middle of your pupil start to lift the line up and out, finishing just before the end of your brow. Next, at the end of the line you’ve just drawn, bring it down, connecting it with the outer corner of your upper lashline. Fill it in with the pencil, then line just the outer half of your bottom lashline. Finish with a coat or two of black thickening mascara, like
Bourjois Volume Glamour Mascara in Ultra Black, and you're ready to prowl!
3. Be a tease.
Take a chignon or ponytail to new heights—literally—by adding some old-fashioned tease to the crown. (Think: Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2012.) Start by spritzing your roots with a volumizing spray like
Ojon Volume Advance Thickening Spray to give hair a little oomph, especially if your locks are fine. Next, pull hair back loosely and hold it in place with a clip. Do this in sections, pulling out small bits of hair at a time starting at the hairline and working your way toward the back of your head.
Spray each section lightly with a strong-hold hairspray like
Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray, then gently tease hair at the roots with a natural-bristled brush. When you have a hit of volume down the middle of your head, gently smooth tresses back. You can finish by pinning into a sleek chignon or tying in a ponytail and wrapping a strand around the elastic to hide it. Now you’ll have a high-flying style that will last all night!
